Comments: From "Canefields" APE 61, p. 50: "On Vilele plantation, managed by Messrs. Bauer and Sons, there are 500 acres under sugar-cane. There is a mill for crushing and refining sugar, a saw-mill worked by steam, also steam ploughs at work; and about ten miles of permanent and portable railway. The progress made in three years is astonishing, the results achieved being due to indomitable energy, and to the employment of some 200 Aboriginal natives, a number of coolies and
, supplemented during the busy season by some 200 white men, who act as overseers, book-keepers, drivers, engineers, carriers, and ploughmen and labourers".
